In the summer of 2007 I spent a month in the Yunnan province of China. Yunnan is in southwest China, near Tibet. It is home to over 25 different ethnic groups, each with their own unique attire. I was struck by the juxtaposition of modern influences and ancient practices. Satellite dishes and cell phones co-existed with a lack of refrigeration and a hole in the floor for bathroom facilities.

I found the Tibetan regions especially interesting because of the appreciation of artistry in the most simple of things. Under the eaves of a simple home would crow a rooster carved out of wood and painted in rich colors. Ponies wore beautiful embroidered blankets. And the people themselves were attired in rich magentas and purples, gold embroidery and brocade. Faces were weathered and worn and the landscape seemed very much a part of the people themselves.

When I returned, I was drawn to the faces and the rich textures and colors of the fabric.  I painted until they stepped out of the image.
